Description

An alginate-antacid formulation, was found to effectively neutralize the post-meal “acid pocket” in GERD patients by forming a floating gel-like raft that displaces acid away from the esophagogastric junction (EGJ), reducing reflux symptoms.
A study showed that in 6 out of 8 patients with postprandial acid pockets, the formulation shifted the acid zone away from the EGJ without affecting its pressure or length. This action likely minimized acid exposure to the esophagus, offering symptom relief.
Measurements were taken in ten symptomatic GERD patients under fasted and post-meal conditions using pH monitoring, manometry, and fluoroscopy. The study findings support the use of alginate-antacid formulations as a targeted and effective approach for managing postprandial GERD.
