Description
Soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections—caused by roundworms, whipworms, and hookworms—are among the most common global infections, leading to anemia, intestinal issues, and poor nutrient absorption.
The WHO recommends annual or biannual deworming with albendazole (400 mg) or mebendazole (500 mg) for children aged 12 months to 12 years in areas where STH prevalence exceeds 20%, with biannual doses in regions above 50% prevalence.
While preventive chemotherapy remains vital, WHO stresses that lasting control depends on improving water, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH) infrastructure.
